Diagnostic Hearing Evaluations for Adults
If you or a loved one is struggling to hear, especially in group settings or noisy environments, a professional hearing assessment can determine whether hearing loss is present. This evaluation helps identify the type and severity of hearing loss and whether medical intervention, ear wax removal, or hearing devices may be necessary. Untreated hearing loss has been linked to cognitive decline, making early intervention essential for maintaining brain health and overall well-being.
Paediatric Hearing Evaluations
Even if a baby passes the newborn hearing screening, hearing loss can still develop later due to genetic factors, trauma, infections, or other medical conditions. Children require normal hearing to develop speech and succeed academically. Even a mild hearing loss can negatively impact language development and learning. Routine annual hearing checks help detect and address any hearing issues early. These evaluations assess both hearing levels and middle-ear function.
Auditory Processing Disorder Assessment & Treatment
Some children and adults struggle to understanding speech even though they can hear soft sounds. This could indicate an auditory processing disorder (APD), where the brain struggles to process and interpret sounds properly. Individuals with APD often struggle in noisy environments, have difficulty focusing, and are easily distracted. A specialized assessment helps identify the underlying causes, leading to a personalized treatment and training plan to improve auditory processing skills and overall listening ability.
Hearing Aid Trials & Fittings
Hearing aid technology has advanced significantly, particularly with the introduction of artificial intelligence, which allows devices to adapt to different listening environments. This enhances speech clarity while reducing listening effort. As an independent audiologist, Judy Heyns provides unbiased recommendations on a variety of top international hearing aid brands. She helps clients find the most suitable solution based on their hearing needs, lifestyle, and financial considerations.
School-Aged Hearing Screening
Hearing screening in early childhood is essential for identifying undiagnosed hearing difficulties that may impact language, communication, and learning. A screening test around Grade R or Grade 1 is recommended to confirm that both ears have normal hearing. These screenings can be conducted at Judy Heyns’ practice or at schools, ensuring that children receive timely interventions if needed.
Assistive Listening Devices
In cases where hearing aids alone may not provide sufficient support, assistive listening devices can improve hearing in both private and public settings. These devices can be particularly beneficial in situations with background noise, such as meetings, classrooms, and restaurants. Various options are available for both children and adults and can be trialed before making a final decision.
Implantable Devices – Bone Anchored Hearing Aids (BAHA)
For individuals with certain types of hearing loss that do not respond well to traditional hearing aids, bone-anchored hearing aids (BAHA) offer an alternative solution. These surgically implanted devices work by transmitting sound through bone conduction rather than through the ear canal. Judy Heyns provides guidance and referrals for individuals who may be candidates for BAHA implants.
Ear Wax Removal
Ear wax plays an essential role in protecting and cleaning the ear canal. However, excessive wax buildup can lead to temporary hearing loss, tinnitus, and discomfort. For individuals with no history of middle-ear surgeries or eardrum perforations, Judy Heyns provides safe and effective manual or spray-wash ear wax removal. Alternatively, appropriate referrals to a GP or ENT specialist will be made for complicated cases.
Hearing Aid and Ear mould Maintenance
All hearing aids and ear moulds need to be cleaned and serviced from time to time. Judy Heyns can assist with cleaning, dehumidification and basic repairs for a variety of hearing aid brands. Hearing aid batteries are also available for purchasing.
Industrial Hearing Testing
South African workplace safety regulations require hearing conservation programs to protect employees from occupational hearing loss. Judy Heyns offers on-site industrial hearing screenings as well as comprehensive diagnostic hearing tests at her practice. When necessary, medical referals are provided to ensure proper care and adherence to legislation.
Custom-Made Swim & Shower Plugs
Designed to prevent water from entering the ear canal, these floatable silicone earpieces are available in various colours. They are ideal for individuals prone to ear infections or those who need to keep their ears dry while swimming or showering.
Custom-made Hearing Protection
For individuals exposed to loud noises regularly—whether in industrial work environments, music performances, or hunting—custom-made hearing protection helps reduce the risk of permanent hearing damage. Custom noise protection solutions are available for:
- Industrial workers
- Musicians and concert-goers
- Hunters and shooting enthusiasts
- Individuals needing sleep plugs to block out snoring
Tinnitus Counselling & Management
Persistent ringing, buzzing, or whistling in the ears—known as tinnitus—can be distressing and disruptive. A thorough evaluation helps determine the possible causes of tinnitus, followed by a tailored management plan that may include sound therapy, hearing aids, counselling, or lifestyle adjustments. Effective management strategies can significantly reduce the impact of tinnitus on daily life.
Meet Judy
Music, language, psychology, science, physiology, and technology—these have always been my greatest passions. Audiology allows me to blend them all in a meaningful way, helping people reconnect with the vibrant world of sound.
I grew up on a farm outside Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo and earned my bachelor’s degree in Speech Therapy and Audiology from the University of Stellenbosch in 1998. My career took me to the UK, where I spent a year in Speech Therapy before focusing on Audiology for five years. There, I gained extensive experience in both adult and paediatric care, trained NHS Audiologists in digital Audiology services, and worked in various clinical settings.
Upon returning to the Western Cape, I continued my work in private practice while raising four energetic boys with my husband. After living in Cape Town and Pinelands, we eventually settled in the beautiful farming community of Ceres. In 2017, I established my Audiology practice at Ceres Netcare Hospital, working closely with an ENT specialist and deepening my expertise in diagnostics. Though the hospital closed following the Covid-19 pandemic, I relocated my practice and now proudly serve individuals of all ages in Ceres, Witzenberg, and the surrounding areas.
With experience in Diagnostic Audiology, adult and paediatric rehabilitation, Industrial Audiology, and hearing conservation, I am passionate about restoring the rich, complex sounds of life to people with hearing difficulties. Because hearing isn’t just a sense—it’s the key to connection, communication, and a full life.
Let me help you seize the sounds of your one beautiful life.
